Prebuilt image analysis Partial match
Amazon Rekognition's image features map partly to Azure Vision Image Analysis, but that API is deprecated and retires on September 25, 2028. Microsoft now recommends Foundry multimodal models and Content Understanding instead.
- Microsoft's own AWS comparison now maps Rekognition to Foundry models plus Azure ML AutoML for vision. It says no single current Azure service covers every Rekognition capability.
- Microsoft's Image Analysis migration guide sends OCR to Document Intelligence, faces to the Face API, embeddings to Cohere Embed (Foundry), and everything else to GPT models or Content Understanding.
- Rekognition offers celebrity recognition and Face Liveness, which Azure's guidance doesn't cover the same way (Azure Face has liveness under Limited Access).
Face detection, verification & search Partial match
Rekognition face APIs map to Azure Face. Azure Face recognition is Limited Access, so you have to apply and be a Microsoft-managed customer or partner.
- Azure has retired the emotion and gender attributes and restricts age, smile, facial hair, hair, and makeup attributes.
- Rekognition offers face collections, search, comparison, celebrity recognition, and Face Liveness without an approval process (subject to AWS policies).
Video analysis & indexing Partial match
Amazon Rekognition Video maps to Azure AI Video Indexer. Video Indexer is a broader "insights" application (transcripts, translation, topics, generative summaries) rather than a low-level detection API.
- Rekognition Video Streaming Events entered maintenance on Mar 31, 2026, and Person Pathing was shut down on Oct 31, 2025.
- Video Indexer can run at the edge as an Azure Arc extension, including live video analysis.
- For GenAI video understanding, AWS also offers TwelveLabs models and Nova on Bedrock, and Bedrock Data Automation. On Azure, Content Understanding handles video.
Image & text content moderation Direct match
Rekognition content moderation (and Comprehend toxicity detection for text) maps to Azure AI Content Safety.
- Rekognition Batch Image Content Moderation entered maintenance on Mar 31, 2026. Real-time moderation APIs are unaffected.
- Azure Content Safety returns multi-severity scores for hate, sexual, violence, and self-harm, and supports custom categories (preview) and blocklists. The old Azure Content Moderator is retired.
