ML platform (SageMaker AI ↔ Azure ML)(2)
Managed training jobs Direct match
SageMaker AI training jobs map to Azure Machine Learning command/sweep jobs on compute clusters or serverless compute.
- SageMaker offers built-in algorithms, framework containers, Managed Spot Training, and warm pools.
- Azure ML uses environments (curated or custom Docker), compute clusters that scale to zero, serverless compute (no cluster to manage), low-priority VMs, and multinode distributed training. You can also attach Kubernetes (AKS/Arc) as compute.
- Hyperparameter tuning maps to sweep jobs on Azure ML.
Resilient large-scale FM training clusters Partial match
Azure has no single managed equivalent of SageMaker HyperPod. The usual Azure patterns are Azure ML compute clusters/serverless with ND-series GPUs, or AKS with GPU node pools attached to Azure ML.
- HyperPod provides persistent clusters with Slurm or EKS orchestration, built-in node health checks and auto-replacement, task governance, and support for Trainium and NVIDIA NVL72 UltraServers.
- On Azure you assemble the equivalent from ND GB200/GB300 v6 or H100/H200 VMs with InfiniBand, orchestrated by AKS or Azure ML. Resiliency features depend on what you configure.
- Microsoft's AWS-to-Azure comparison guide doesn't list a HyperPod equivalent.
