Cold-start mitigation for functions Partial match

Lambda provisioned concurrency and SnapStart map to always-ready instances in Azure Functions (Flex Consumption and Premium plans). Azure has no snapshot-restore equivalent of SnapStart.

  • Pre-warming. Provisioned concurrency keeps N initialized environments per version or alias and can be scaled on a schedule or by target tracking. Azure always-ready instances keep a baseline of instances per function or group (Flex) or per app (Premium, which also has prewarmed buffer instances).
  • Snapshots. SnapStart snapshots the initialized environment (Java 11+, Python 3.12+, .NET 8+) and restores it on cold start. Azure has nothing comparable, so reduce init time in code or keep instances warm.
  • Lambda Managed Instances avoid cold starts by running on dedicated EC2 capacity. The closest Azure parallel is the Premium or Dedicated plan.

Functions on dedicated or reserved instances Partial match

Lambda Managed Instances map to the Azure Functions Premium and Dedicated (App Service) plans. On both, functions run on provider-managed instances you pay for continuously, but only AWS lets you pick EC2 instance types and apply EC2 commitments.

  • Instance choice. Lambda Managed Instances run on current-generation EC2 types you choose (including Graviton4 and network-optimized). Azure Premium uses EP1–EP3 plan sizes. Dedicated uses App Service plan SKUs.
  • Concurrency and duration. Managed Instances allow multiple concurrent requests per environment and up to 90-minute async invocations. The Azure Premium and Dedicated plans support longer or unbounded runs.
  • Discounts. EC2 Savings Plans and RIs apply to Lambda Managed Instances. The Azure savings plan for compute covers the Functions Premium plan.
