Read replicas (in-region and cross-region) Direct match

RDS read replicas map to read replicas in Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL. Both use asynchronous native replication, can sit in another region, and can be promoted.

  • Endpoints. Azure PostgreSQL has virtual endpoints that keep stable writer and reader hostnames through promotion. On RDS you repoint the application or use Route 53 or RDS Proxy.
  • Promotion. Azure PostgreSQL can promote a replica to be the new primary (with matching tier and storage) or to an independent server. RDS promotes a replica to a standalone instance.

Cross-region relational disaster recovery Partial match

Aurora Global Database maps to Azure SQL active geo-replication and failover groups (for Azure SQL), and to cross-region read replicas for Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL.

  • Mechanism. Aurora Global Database replicates at the storage layer to up to 10 secondary Regions, with managed switchover and failover and optional write forwarding. Azure SQL replicates asynchronously at the database level. Failover groups give stable read-write and read-only listener endpoints across regions.
  • Scope. Failover groups can move a group of databases (or a whole Managed Instance) together. Aurora works per cluster.
