AWS Step Functions maps to Azure Logic Apps for visual, service-integration workflows. Code-first orchestration is in the separate Durable Functions row.
- Model. Step Functions are JSON or YAML state machines (Amazon States Language) with Standard (exactly-once, up to 1 year) and Express (at-least-once, up to 5 minutes) types. Logic Apps are trigger-and-action workflows with 1,400+ connectors, in Consumption (multitenant) or Standard (single-tenant, stateful or stateless workflows, VNet integration).
- Integration focus. Step Functions targets AWS service orchestration (optimized and SDK integrations, Distributed Map for large-scale parallel processing). Logic Apps targets enterprise integration (SaaS and on-premises connectors through the data gateway, B2B/EDI with integration accounts).
- Local development. Logic Apps Standard workflows can be built and run locally in VS Code. Step Functions offers Workflow Studio and local testing with the TestState API.
